Optics: Very Good Condition, front element has some coating marks/ minor scratches. Rear element has some very minor marks. Nothing that affects image quality. Lens is extremely sharp Sonnar, originates from the ‘Nickel Era’ of Sonnars from 1935, hence also lacks a front filter thread.
Aperture: 90% Oil Free
Mechanics: Excellent – bespoke all brass lens. No aluminum used inside or outside the lens body, chrome plated, very heavy. Body underwent a full restoration and rebuild.
This is a very rare Sonnar. The optics date back to 1935, and are of the ‘Nickel Era’, which contain a generally sharper Sonnar formula then later Jena copies. These sharper ‘Nickel Era’ Sonnar formulas, also have more field curvature than later models.
The optical block was rehoused into a bespoke chrome plated brass body, custom made at Skyllaney UK. Lens has been adjusted and collimated for accurate Leica RF usage, and comes with an LTM to M adapter and front and rear lens caps.
It’s one of the finest and oldest 5cm f/1.5 Sonnar lenses we have seen.
